For recyling points and other env. related info in Scotland (yes including Aberdeen) have a look at Sort It sort-it.org.uk

“Sort It aims to provide you with useful information and practical advice on how you can Reduce, Reuse and Recycle your household waste in Scotland. Sort It lists a wide range of local and national outlets, facilities and services to help you Reduce, Reuse and Recycle your household waste.” (from the website.)

I especially like the maps and clear information about recyling points and such with a postcode search. Try it, get informed.

And if you like a spin around the town for FREE then lend a bicycle at Becycle becycle.org.uk a most brilliant initiative on Don Street in Old Aberdeen (you can find them via the Sort It website too).

OER is the new milennia for online educational resources a change in paradigms can be seen slowly changing from private information and copyright to open information and copyleft. Open courses and the exchange of coursematerial between educators and the possibility for students anywhere and whomever to take courses for free online is very important for us all to be able to reach a just society where everyone has access to the same level of education. On a global scale this movement for OER is very important, as it gives people in developing countries the possibility to utilize the resources and know-how of old from developed countries. However countries in Africa for example are working very vigorously at providing e-learning resources for their citizens developing new modes of e-learning as well as implementing state-of-the-art tecniques and technology to be in the forefront of this very important field.

especially in today society if you have a look at any regular newscast you?ll see a multitude of death and suffering but very rarely the happy news unless its revolutionary, of course suffering is also important to show but showing the bad without the good tends to numb us. we do no longer see the need but only the vast problems of the world, we need to inspire more to show how people solve the suffering how they manage and why? what is alien must be bad or at least shunned, i heard an interview with a nigerian woman who was visiting europe and she was stunned by the news about africa she saw in the tv, why? she said she wasn’t able to identify with that picture of africa at all, is that who we are? of course there is great suffering in many part of africa but there are also great cultures, places where people live in peace and prosperity, this is a picture all too rarely televised or otherwise communicated in the ?western world?. no news is good news? yes perhaps the overflow of information is not always so very balanced.

For those things WLW can’t handle there is a set of add-on’s to be found and installed easily though + Add a Plugin… some that work some that don’t. Some neat tools there though. Get it here.

The freedom of recreational seagoing is in the same class as travelling by motorcycle. However, some facts about gasoline/petrol and oil consumption of atleast older engines (there are alot of them still out there). A 20 horsepower outboard motor uses about 10 litres/hour, a 35 hp about 15 l/h and a 90 hp about 35 l/hour, these numbers are by no means fact and could vary immensly but for the three engines I’ve been using in the past years in different kind of weather. They are also ofcourse on different boats and used for different purposes so this would also affect the outcome quite naturally.

The trip we took from Kökar to Hitis was a 4 hour trip times 15 litres per hour should make about 60 litres in total the total length was about 90 km => 1,5km/litre! Comparing with the motorcycle of 0,045 litres/1km or 4,5l/100km. Throwing into this mixture that outboard motors need about 2% of oil in the petrol to run properly thats another 1,33 litres of motor oil in 100km. Oh yeah btw if you don’t want to do the math for the 35 hp old Evinrude it came out to 66,6 litres/100km. 666.

Not very sustainable at all…

To be continued…in one form or another =o)
